Position Overview

Legg Mason's Technology department is hiring a Senior Cybersecurity Engineer.  The position focuses on seeking out, testing, and engineering new solutions and technologies to help secure Legg Mason’s infrastructure and environment. Additionally, the position will interface with management and senior management to help make critical decisions during potential incidents.


This individual will focus on security aspects of Legg Mason’s technology-enabled advice platform, Financial Guard, and other new initiatives. This individual will advise internal business units on security tools, controls, and processes, as well as having general security/risk assessment responsibilities.  A mix of strong technical, project management, and general interpersonal skills will be required to be successful in this position. This critical position will report directly to the Legg Mason Chief Information Security Officer and work out of Legg Mason's world headquarters in Baltimore, MD (Harbor East).

Key Responsibilities & Duties Include, but not Limited to

  • Maintain and expand the security architecture for Financial Guard through sound engineering processes
  • Directly engineer, oversee, and manage the implementation of any security solutions that Legg Mason purchases, including the migration of Financial Guard to a cloud based solution
  • Areas this position will focus heavily on include:
    • Application Security and Integrity
    • IaaS Security, specifically Amazon Web Services security services
    • Service Organization Controls (SOC) 2 Type 2
  • Ability to independently perform a risk assessment of the cybersecurity controls implemented for an application and its infrastructure
  • Ability to lead discussions with CISOs and IT staff at our corporate and affiliate organizations to advise them on security tools, controls, and processes, as necessary
  • This position will require 5% travel to our offices in the US and Europe

Ideal Qualifications and Experience

  • 5+ years of work experience with cybersecurity controls and security architectures
  • Certain applicable certifications considered a plus (e.g. Splunk, Palo Alto, Microsoft, CISSP, AWS)
  • Experience with some of the following would be beneficial:
    • Amazon Web Services security services
    • NIST Cybersecurity Framework
    • Security Incident Response


  • Self-directed and effective working independently, yet equally comfortable contributing in a team environment
  • Able to collaborate successfully and interact with various individuals, teams, and departments throughout a global organization
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy
    • Able to be present in the office during regular business hours and to monitor alerts during off hours
    • Able to travel as needed
