  • Position Overview

    The German business development team is a key part of our international sales effort, deepening key relationships with top tier European quasi-institutional, retail, and institutional clients whilst pro-actively identifying and pursuing new business opportunities with new and existing clients. 

     

    The distribution unit covering Germany, Austria, and German speaking Luxembourg is located in Frankfurt. Currently, the sales team is concentrating on deepening existing relationships mainly with the leading third party distributors in the region, fund of fund managers, family offices and major consultants. The team also markets the Legg Mason products to a select, but increasing number of institutional investors such as banks, insurance companies, and pension funds.

     

    The Director of Business Development will focus on the distribution of the mutual fund ranges of Legg Mason and its affiliates. The support in the distribution of segregated accounts managed by Legg Mason affiliates is a complementary activity. Given the particular build-out situation, the position offers the unique opportunity of forming and designing the business in Germany for a leading global asset management firm. Accordingly, the position requires a person with a pronounced business acumen demonstrating ownership and responsibility for the existing and prospective customers assigned.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Senior level relationship building - both with local and global institutions
    • Contribute to a long term strategy for the wholesale business in Germany
    • Manage a range of distribution channels with a focus on IFA's, Wealth Management firms with capacity to manage a range of clients
    • To manage and serve a multiple range of distribution channels in the “institutionalized” high end of the wholesale market as well as the traditional institutional market. Clients include Fund of Funds, Asset Managers, Private Banks, Family Offices, Foundations, German Cooperative Banks and Savings Banks (Volksbanken and Sparkassen), Pension Trusts and Insurance Companies.
    • Ability to explain and consult on the various funds investment processes
    • Deepen existing strategic partnerships with distributors
    • Negotiation of new distribution agreements
    • Technical investment sales to asset managers, banks and other intermediaries
    • Design of commercial/marketing programs with key distributors
    • Deliver a consistent house view to the intermediary market
    • Deliver quality information to the clients relating to fund structures and performance
    • Focus accurately on those clients most able to support Legg Mason products
    • Be involved in a variety of road show presentations
    • Maintain strong relationships with the Client Services team and assist them to establish channel links in the market
    • Give the highest quality service to clients in a professional and timely manner
    • Deliver a cohesive investment story which involves both process and style to clients and potential clients in a consistent manner
    • Maintain a clear understanding of Legg Mason Investments products and their construction
    • Various internal projects and liaisons, for instance with the service, marketing, product development and compliance / audit teams

    Qualifications:

    • A minimum of five to ten years relevant sales experience, preferably in Germany, Austria or Switzerland
    • German speaking
    • Professional English language skills
    • Deeply commercial, fundamentally entrepreneurial and proactive
    • Achievement oriented, focused on exceeding business goals with sufficient attention to detail
    • Combining gravitas, energy and ability to have impact and win senior client confidence
    • High tolerance of ambiguity and ability to work effectively within the Legg Mason Investments international matrix
    • Excellent communicator both externally to market and internally to key stakeholders across Legg Mason Investments
    • Team orientated and non territorial collaborative style
    • Well honed negotiating and influencing skills
