Position Overview

Legg Mason is hiring a Data Governance Lead to be a part of Legg Mason's centralized Data Governance function. In this newly created position, you will manage all Data Governance activities, coordinating across various Business and Technology departments. You will work within a small team of dedicated data management specialists and work closely with Business Data Stewards, Technical Stewards, and Data Owners throughout the Data Onboarding and Data Change Management process.


Responsibilities include ensuring data is defined & cataloged, data is profiled, and business rules and data quality rules are tested and implemented. The Data Governance Lead is also responsible for escalating, coordinating & resolving, in conjunction with Business Data Stewards, all material issues or misstatements resulting in the data not being fit for business purpose.

Key Responsibilities & Duties Include, but not Limited to

The Data Governance Lead will work within the Chief Data Office coordinating with business stakeholders to elicit and analyze data needs & requirements - 

  • Responsible for driving Data Governance requirements across several projects, ensuring business data needs are met on a timely basis
  • Manage and coordinate Data Governance inventory tool (Collibra) data onboarding workflows & change management workflows
  • Maintenance of Collibra business terms and definitions, technical metadata, data linage & business transformation rules. Ensure metadata is clear & concise and certified by the Business and Technical Stewards
  • Facilitate team/business understanding of how data flows between business applications, interfaces & Enterprise Data Hub.
  • Manage the critical data element (CDE) identification framework process
  • Coordinate with business & technical stewards to define, test and implement business rules and data quality rules
  • Conduct data profiling on critical data sets across all LM core source data systems
  • Conduct data profiling on derived and aggregate data sets stored within the Enterprise Data Hub
  • Work directly with Data Stewards in maintaining policies & standards, business rules, data definitions, testing depth & data quality controls
  • Work with the Data Management team to ensure controls are fully implemented for all CDEs
  • Manage exception management & resolution process.  Perform root cause analysis of data issues, with proposals for permanent solutions to address such data issues
  • Ensure data issue metrics are captured and periodic reporting is completed
  • Maintenance of Data Governance / Collibra operational procedures
  • Assist driving adoption of Data Governance process and usage of Collibra DGC
  • Additional projects as required, working with management & technology to implement process enhancement, supporting the overall Data Governance initiative


Ideal Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree
  • 4-8 years experience in finance, banking or asset management activities, specifically in data management, data analysis and/or data governance functions  
  • Experience managing master data, business & technical metadata, data profiling, codesets management
  • Excel experience
  • Oracle and SQL knowledge preferred
  • Robust knowledge of specific data attributes of all asset types such as Equities, Fixed Income & derivative instruments
  • Ability to work efficiently & effectively in a time critical environment, meeting day-to-day business deliverables as well as assisting the team in project deliverables
  • Must be able to work in the United States without sponsorship; we are unable to provide sponsorship for this position
