  • Position Overview

    Interested in working on a dynamic, global compliance team that's focused on distribution activity? Legg Mason is seeking a Compliance Manager to join the US Distribution Compliance team in either New York (Midtown) or Stamford, CT. Reporting to the CCO, you will focus on compliance issues in connection with sales practice issues at a global level and facilitate global standards. If you're an out-of-the-box, big thinker with experience with SEC and FINRA rules and regulations, this is for you!

    Key Responsibilities & Duties Include, but not Limited to

    • Identify risks to the firm, business conflicts of interest, and regulatory matters and provide practical solutions to the business
    • Manage and lead a team of compliance analysts who focus on sales oversight, including gifts and entertainment, sales supervision, fees and charges paid to intermediaries or charged to customers, customer complaints, AML, conflicts of interest, retention of books and records, and firm element training  
    • Coordinate, conduct and manage spot checks of business units to verify that adequate controls are in place and that there is compliance with these controls pursuant to regulatory requirements;
    • Coordinate global sales practice standards
    • Prepare summary reports to CCO and business managers that detail compliance findings and provide corrective actions
    • Design and administer firm element training, compliance training and on-going focused training of registered representatives and business units
    • Assist in the development of policies and procedures
    • Modify and maintain as applicable department internal compliance procedures and firm books and records
    • Manage, review and provide guidance on sales practice matters
    • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the department, including managerial reports and workflows
    • Provide guidance and management to Compliance Officers

    Ideal Qualifications and Experience

    • Bachelors Degree
    • 4-7 years of compliance experience with focus on broker-dealer regulation.  Areas of experience that are helpful include distribution activity, wholesaling, general sales practices, retirment and monitoring controls
    • Proven ability to lead teams and provide guidance in challenging situations
    • Proficient at interpreting and applying FINRA/SEC/MSRB rules and regulatory positions relating to distribution activities including sales practices and wholesaling, use of marketing materials and firm books and records
    • Practiced at conducting meaningful audits of business activities and controls using representative samples
    • Good written communication skills to prepare detailed responses to clients/ business partners/ regulators
    • Good oral communication skills to appropriately discuss and resolve matters with internal business partners and conduct training sessions
    • Thoroughness and attention to detail
    • Ability to prepare detailed reports and maintain firm books and records to satisfy regulatory requirements
