  • Position Overview

    The International Tax Director is responsible for the US international aspects of tax provisioning, compliance, controversy, planning, and transfer pricing, as well as oversight over all local tax matters outside of the United States.


    Key Responsibilities:


    • Prepare/review quarterly and annual US international and offshore ASC 740 tax accruals, inputs to global effective tax rate calculations and footnote disclosures.
    • Maintain an inventory of US international and offshore uncertain tax positions and prepare appropriate documentation in support of FIN 48 positions.
    • Prepare/review Forms 5471, 8858 and 8865 for all relevant entities.
    • Prepare/review GILTI, BEAT and FDII calculations.
    • Prepare/review §163(j) interest expense limitation calculations.
    • Coordinate preparation and maintenance of supporting documentation for E&P pools, tax pools, PTI, and US tax basis for foreign subsidiaries and/or branches.
    • Analyze and determine existence and amount of any §956 inclusions, §986(c) and §987 gains/losses, Subpart F income inclusions, ECI, etc.
    • Prepare/review Form 1118 and supporting documentation including FTC calculations, the gathering of information on foreign activities, §861 sourcing of income and expense allocations and apportionment as well as characterization of assets.
    • Prepare/review required elections and disclosures such as check-the-box elections, GRAs, DCLs, etc.
    • Coordinate tax audit management and defense with respect to international tax issues, including transfer pricing.
    • Work collaboratively with the Director, Domestic Tax and Managing Director & Head of Tax to formulate and implement tax planning strategies to minimize effective tax rate and cash tax charges with specific emphasis on international tax initiatives and special projects including foreign tax credit optimization modeling, GILTI/BEAT modeling and various research projects.
    • Act as a key liaison to Affiliate and Legg Mason finance organizations to increase understanding of the businesses and provide tax expertise and guidance as to the tax implications of current and proposed transactions.
    • Compete to Win Initiatives. Working in conjunction with the entire Tax management team develop policies, processes and workflows to ensure the efficient use of tax accounting resources including in-house tax professionals, outside tax and accounting professionals, software, etc.
    • Provide tax input into M&A projects, including tax due diligence, review of tax sections in acquisition agreements, and post-acquisition integration/compliance
    • Responsible for formulating, implementing, monitoring and defending tax efficient transfer pricing policies, including development of a system to track, update and store intercompany agreements, business operations narratives and functional analyses to ensure policies are supportable and in accordance with latest U.S. and non-U.S. rules and regulations.
    • Responsible for oversight and support of the International Tax Manager in management of all local tax matters outside of the United States including;
      • Review of tax provision inputs for accuracy and compliance with ASC 740 requirements
      • Monitoring of outsourced compliance activities.
      • Information gathering and formulation of local jurisdiction audit responses
      • Analyze and document assessment of FIN 48 tax exposures
      • Local country tax planning opportunities, special projects and business support as required.
    • Provide mentoring and meaningful training and development opportunities for tax department managers and staff.
