  • Position Overview

    Our US Sales organization is seeking a highly driven and motivated Institutional Sales Associate to join the Private Bank & Institutional sales team in New York, Stamford or Baltimore. 


    As Institutional Sales Associate, you will generate new business in your assigned territory and provide business development support to our team of external Sales Directors, with a focus on helping to grow Legg Mason’s institutional presence.  You will also partner with the broader sales team to cultivate leads within the respective territories. Come join our expanding team in this newly created role - grow your future with a growing asset management firm!

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Increasing Legg Mason’s gross and net sales across all vehicles – Mutual Funds, ETFs, SMAs, CITs, LLCs, LPs and direct Institutional Sep Accounts – as well as market share, and product diversification by leveraging our data-driven business planning process, client segmentation, and consultative selling approach within the territory in partnership with the External Sales Directors.
    • Key client/prospect types: Institutional “Intermediaries” such as Private Banks, Institutional Consultants and Traditional Consultants.    Also Direct Institutional business development responsibilities, including Corporate and Public DB plans, and Endowments & Foundations for select Legg Mason affiliates.
    • Maintain a high level of proactive calls on a daily basis to support and develop new and existing relationships
    • Utilize a data-driven approach and tools to educate clients/prospects on product offerings
    • High usage of CRM system and additional technology to execute on a data driven territory business plan
    • Leverage data to cross-sell existing relationships, and prospect new opportunities
    • Adhere to all compliance regulations and guidelines including use of approved marketing materials, fund prospectus requirements, and proper licensing


    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
    • 2-5 years of sales experience within a financial services firm
    • Superior communication, consultation, and listening skills to identify sales opportunities, suggest creative solutions, and manage challenging discussions with sophisticated clients to quickly establish rapport for future business development
    • Experience with, or knowledge of, the institutional sales process
    • Extensive investment product knowledge and understanding of financial concepts and capital markets, and the ability to articulate a variety of investment topics ranging from fundamental asset classes to fixed income solutions
    • Student of the market; seeks out learning opportunities internally and independently
    • Data-oriented and analytical; able to apply data to the sales process
    • A passion for success and performance at the highest level in an incentive-driven environment
    • Enthusiastic team player and self-starter with an ability to multi-task, assess, and prioritize business opportunities
    • CRM experience strongly desired (Salesforce.com)
    • FINRA Series 7 & 63 required
    • Monthly travel required
